How to make fake beards and moustaches is relatively fun and easy, but the results can be deadly, sort-of...

For example, on the 4th of July, makeup professor Steve Bauer plays Uncle Sam using the techniques illustrated below.

It's a fun gig. Recently after doing our show at the Burbank Starlight bowl in Los Angeles CA, Steve and Marianne went into the audience where everyone wanted to take our photo. That's very normal for the Jokesters after shows. However, this year, Steve realized that no body had cameras. Everyone was taking photos still, but they were all using cell phones. So about three thousand people were pointing their cell phones at us Jokesters. That's the fun part.

Now to the dangerous part. Just after 9-11 in New York, I was asked to do Osama Bin Laden using crepe hair. The result scarred so many people that Steve was afraid to go the mailbox in front of his house because someone may assassinate him trying to collect the 25 million dollar reward.

Step 1: Actor Steve Bauer starts with a clean shaven face. Avoiding adhesives in real facial hair will be easier to remove the makeup.

Step 2: Crepe hair is wool. It comes in braided strands, and the braids must be undone.

Step 3: Iron the hair with high heat and steam straightens the hair from it's kinked pattern.

Step 4: Separate the hair so it is not as dense as the clumped wool.

Step 5: Steve Bauer paints liquid latex on his chin. If the actor would be in high heat situations like under hot stage lights, Steve would have used Pros Aide, a medical adhesive.

Step 6: Crepe hair being trimmed with barber scissors.

Step 7: Press the crepe hair in place, holding it for a few seconds while the adhesive dries.

Step 8: More liquid latex for the moustache area.

.

Step 9: Steve Bauer adds some moustache hair.

Always add hair from the bottom to the top.

Step 10: Adding some more chin spinach.

Step 11: The contour of the goatee is becoming clear, and after a final trim with scissors...

Step 12: A final crepe hair. Marianne Wittelsberger added some gray hair color to make the final beard and moustache color match Steve Bauer's hair.

The addition of facial hair dramatically changes  a character's facial characteristics.
